Edgar L. “Hank” Tanner, Jr., 70, of Allentown passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He was the husband of the late Gayle E. (Wood) Tanner. Born in Milton, PA, he was the son of the late Edgar L. Sr. and Erma (Tate) Tanner. Ed graduated from Milton High School in 1967 and moved to Allentown to attend Allentown Business School. After being employed briefly by a hat producer, he landed a job at Western Electric where he started working in September. Ed was drafted into the Army on May 23, 1968 and was deployed to Vietnam from 1968-1971 where he earned a Bronze Star for his service. After retuning from the war, he resumed his work at Western Electric as a security guard. Over the next 35 years, Ed was promoted multiple times and held various positions as the company evolved, eventually retiring as a Labor Relations Senior Manager for Agere Systems in 2003.

As a long time resident of Allentown, Ed was active in the community and was involved with many organizations over the years including Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts, NAACP, and the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees). He also served on the Mayor’s Literacy Council.

Ed loved his family, his job, baseball and golf, telling stories, and sharing meals with his good friends at the Bull and Bear. Survivors include his daughter Angela and her husband Joseph; son Marc; brother David; and 6 grandchildren, Jakahn, Kyreana, Caleb, Kyra, Janiah, and Karryn. He was predeceased by a brother, Albert, a sister Carolyn, and a grandmother, Amanda Tate. Ed will be fondly remembered as a caring and loyal brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend who spent his life doing whatever he could to help others. His thoughtfulness and generosity were unmatched.

Services, 11:00AM, Tuesday, October 23 at Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 W. Highland St., Allentown. Calling will begin at 9:30AM and burial with military honors to follow at Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown.
