QMC Leonard W. Burkhart USN-RET,70, of Allentown, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp. Born in Allentown, he was the son of Doris (Ettl) Burkhart Kale of Spring City, PA and late Frank R. Burkhart and he was a step son of the late Lester E. Kale. Leonard was a professional photographer and owner of Allentown Custom Photography and a dedicated substitute teacher in many local districts. Proudly serving his county during the Vietnam Era, and serving with the Navy Reserves, Leonard received his certificate of retirement from the Armed Forces on April 23, 2008. He was an active member of various veteran organizations including Greater Allentown VFW Post 13. He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where he played football and later continued to be a sports team photographer. Leonard was a dedicated and devoted member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Allentown where he was deeply loved. He was a world traveler and had a heart of gold, whether he was tending to his neighborhood cats or mentoring his students or even his love for Philadelphia sports teams.

Survivors, mother Doris, sister Jane E. and her husband James Fritchman of Effort, nephew Richard, niece Christina and her husband Eric Serfass, nephew Andrew Fritchman and his wife Karen, great niece Kayle and great nephew Jameson, stepsisters and their families. He was predeceased by his brother Frederick and sister and brother in law Kathleen D. and Dennis Deutsch.

Services, 11:00 AM, Monday, July 9 at Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 W. Highland St., Allentown. Calling will begin Monday at 10:00 AM with graveside military honors to follow services at Highland Memorial Park, Allentown. Additional calling hours will be Sunday, July 8 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
