Neal Edward Kern, age 70, died on December 22, 2017, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was the devoted husband of Linda (Keys) Kern for 49 years. He was born in Allentown to parents, Shirley L (Gombert) Kern and Neal L. Kern. Neal was a loving father, grandfather and uncle to his family and will be deeply missed by those he loved and those who loved him. He genuinely cherished his grandchildren and great nieces and nephews. His JOYS in life included football (especially his 2 favorite teams, (Auburn and the Cleveland Browns), playing volleyball, model railroading, and Schaefer beer. After graduating from WAHS in 1964, Neal received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University, AL. Upon graduating from Auburn University in 1070, Neal was an Engineer for Pidcock Co. and A.L. Wiesenberger Assoc. in Allentown PA. Neal was Allentown City Engineer from 1979 to 1989 and Director of Public Works from 1989 to 2005, retiring after 26 years. In 1995 he was awarded Public Work Administrator of the Year in PA. Upon retiring from the city of Allentown, Neal enjoyed a 2nd engineering career with his son, Ryan, at Barry Isett & Associates.

Survivors: Loving wife, Linda, son Ryan and wife, Megan, his grandchildren, Hannah and Max, niece, Laura Fisher, Albright and husband Jon, brother, Rick Kern and sister, Sandie Cressman Smith. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rhonda Michelle, in 1986.

Services: 10:30 am Wednesday December 27, 2017 at the Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 W. Highland St, Allentown PA 18102. Calling 9:00 to 10:30 Wednesday in the funeral home.
