Barton W. ”Bart” Kunkel, 90, of Allentown, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Luther Crest Retirement Community. He was the husband of Marjorie E. (Oswald) Burke Kunkel. His first wife Katherine E. (Greaves) passed away in 1988. Born in Hartford CT, he was a son of the late Barton E. and Dorothy (DeWolf) Kunkel. After graduating from Allentown High School in 1945, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and served during WWII as a cryptographer. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Solmar Surgical Supply Company, beginning as a delivery man and rising to co-ownership over a 38-year period. He had a profession that gave him the opportunity to help others – a calling that he followed all his life. He volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital for 10 years. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown. All who knew him would say he was always there whenever a helping hand was needed. He was born to help others – strangers as well as friends and family. Bart enjoyed the game of golf and was one of the organizers of golf tournaments sponsored by the Penn State Alumni of Lehigh County. He was a world traveler and especially enjoyed sailing on the high seas.

Survivors: wife; daughters, Jill DiJirolanio and husband William; Kim Wanish and husband Michael; sons Brad Kunkel; Carl Schaller and wife Lisa; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister Charlotte Miller. He was predeceased by a brother Donald and sisters Barbara Standifor and Joan Crane

Memorial Service: 1:30 pm Saturday, October 21, 2017 in Crest Hall at Luther Crest Retirement Village, 800 Hausman RD, Allentown.
